Airport documents
Whakatāne Airport is a Council Controlled Organisation (CCO) under the Local Government Act 2002 and has operated in this structure since 2006. The airport is a valued community asset that contributes to residents’ quality of life and supports the economic wellbeing of the Whakatāne District and the wider Eastern Bay of Plenty.
It provides an important transport link connecting communities across the Eastern Bay of Plenty with other parts of Aotearoa New Zealand. The airport also has historical connections with Ngāi Taiwhakaea and Ngāti Awa, with opportunities to strengthen partnerships and support shared economic development.
Key planning and governance documents, including the Airport Master Plan and Statement of Intent (SOI), outline the strategic direction for the airport and the investment required to maintain and enhance this important infrastructure.
Airport Master Plan
Our Master Plan outlines how Whakatāne Airport will develop and operate in the coming years. It sets the airport’s objectives and desired outcomes, guides updates to the Airport Business Plan, and aligns with the Whakatāne District Council Long Term Plan. The plan also considers the airport’s financial position and funding needs, supports strong relationships with iwi, partners, stakeholders, and the community, and embeds kaitiakitanga and sustainability in airport operations.
Statement of Intent
The Statement of Intent outlines the goals and priorities of Whakatāne Airport’s Joint Venture for 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2027. It is submitted by Whakatāne District Council in accordance with section 35 of the Local Government Act 2002.
